Mike Binks Memorial Road Race

Curran scores his fifth win in North Yorks

SCORING his fifth win in the Cleveland Wheelers event, Paul Curran (Optimum Performance RT) powered his way to a solo victory in the Mike Binks Memorial road race over an 89-mile course based on Newby, North Yorkshire, on Sunday.

Olympic team pursuiter Chris Newton (North Wirral Velo) had gone clear after only eight miles with North Humberside Division champion Pete Coggins (Brough Wheelers).

They opened up a minute's lead before being caught by Curran, former national amateur champion David Cook (Middridge CRT) and Martin Wallbank (North East RT).

Then, with 15 miles remaining, Curran put in a lone attack and crossed the line 70 seconds clear to take the FAB Homes (Estate Agents)-sponsored race.

Newton outsprinted Cook for second place as Coggins trailed by a further minute.
