Northern Velo Spring Road Race

Star rider Curran's in charge

THORNABY cyclist Paul Curran (Manchester Wheelers) had a fine double win in Cleveland.

Curran started with Roxy Wheelers' 20 1/2 mile time trial based at Scaling Dam on the Moors road and won in a time of 55 minutes 3 seconds, with David Lund (Middridge CRT) 1 min 41 sec slower in second place but over a minute ahead of Neville Jackson, from the promoting club, in third.

Paul's second win came the following day when in wet and cold conditions, 46 riders set out on the 63 mile Northern Velo Spring Road Race. No break gained any significant advantage as they battled with the elements, with most of the action seeming to be at the back as the riders suffered from the cold in the very fast-moving bunch.

With two miles to go, Curran finally managed to gain an advantage, small as it was, and only one rider, Geoff Davison (Chesterfield Coureurs), managed to stay in contention, three seconds behind.

The two gradually pulled away from the main group, now down to 17 riders, and this was how they finished. Featherstone's Gary Proud led the bunch claim third place, 12 seconds down with Mike Milen, from the organising club, fourth.
