Cleveland Division 4,000m Pursuit Championship

Curran's golden booster

JUST TWO days before the opening of the British track championships at Leicester, Stockton Wheelers' international Paul Curran took his third Cleveland divisional track title of the season at the county stadium.

Curran confidently retained his 4,000 metre pursuit title beating eventual silver medallist Ferryhill Wheeler/Dryden Insurance rider Steve Davies and can now look forward to the defence of his British points and Madison titles next week.

Although he was only the sixth fastest qualifier, Thornaby CRT's Dave Thompson got into the final rounds and took the bronze medal when holidays eliminated Middridge rider Dave Lund and a broken collarbone ruled out Teesside Clarion's Paul Tinney.

Curran also had two other wins during the evening's track competition, taking the "devil" ahead of Dinniington's Kevin Byers and Clarion's Steve Bell and later the three mile scratch race with Bell second, ahead of Whitby Wheelers' Chris Greaves.
