E.S.C.A. NATIONAL TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

Curran sweeps the board

YOUNG riders from many parts of the country were in Cleveland for a feast of track racing during the weekend when the English Schools' Cycling Association held their national grass and hard track championships.

Thornaby schoolboy Paul, a member of Stockton Wheelers, was the most successful local rider making a clean sweep of all the individual titles in the over-15-years category.

The Bertram Ramsey School claimed team pursuit and individual awards.

Hosts for Saturday's grass meeting was the Laurence Jackson School, Guisborough.

Paul Curran began his assault on the medals with the sprint title, the silver medal going to Bertram Ramsey's Gordon Waring, a member of Cleveland Wheelers. The bronze award went to Martin Harris of the Riland Bedford School.

Clairville Stadium was the venue for Sunday's full day of hard track racing. Paul Curran again carried off the most senior sprint award along with the individual pursuit title.

On both occasions it was Mark Crowther of Prior Pursglove College, Guisborough, who claimed the silver medals ahead of David Miller, of Grove Comprehensive School.
