Teesside Cycling Association Hill Climb

Schoolboy wins

SCHOOLBOY Paul Curran equalled his Stockton Wheelers' clubmate Ian Murray's course record of 2-31.5 to win the Teesside hill-climb on Court Moor, Kildale, by a very decisive margin.

He was already showing his obvious strength as he negotiated the stiff, sharp left-hander a third of the way up the 1-in-6 half-mile hill on his 56-inch fixed gear.

Sixteen riders took on the leg-bending task in the bright autumn sunshine, which as usual brought almost all the local clubs to the now traditional end-of-season gathering.

Stockton's Ian Mackenzie was the first inside three minutes, then his 2-53.9 was reduced by member of the winning Hartlepool CC - Cameron Strongarm team Alan Busby, who held the lead until team-mate Martin Bourner improved on his fourth last year with 2-52.6.

Only Curran could better Bourner's effort. Having started near the end of the field, the 15-year-old GHS "10" heat winner proved once again that he is one of Cleveland's fastest-improving youngsters, having already established himself as a good all-rounder.

Last man to start, former Cleveland Wheeler and previous winner of the event Paul Wesson Houghton CC, found his 51 gear a little low, but he displaced Busby by two-tenths of a second to finish third.
