Cleveland Coureurs 'Hilly'

Roy takes to hills to set record

TAKING an impressive victory in the Cleveland Coureurs Hilly time trial, his second during the past three years, Richmond and Darlington's Roy Taylor smashed his own course record by more than two and a half minutes with his 58-8 performance.

The moving of the 22 1/2 mile event from it's former early season position to the new midsummer spot on the local calendar proved a huge success for all concerned on the warm, sunny evening.

There were 53 riders and many spectators added a social atmosphere to the competition.

The event used a route from Broughton over Clay Bank through Bilsdale to the Sun Inn. Returning to Broughton and on to Ingleby Greenhow before the very steep final ascent back to the summit of Clay Bank.

Leading
Taylor's win gave him a very decisive margin over the next placed finisher, Teesside Clarion's Stuart Morris, who with his 1-1-43 was 23 seconds faster than Huddersfield Star Wheeler Richard Booth in third place.

Rob Robinson proved the fastest of the fifteen members of the promoting club to complete the course taking fourth place with his 1-2-28. Three other Coureurs took places in the leading ten collecting the team award for the aggregate times of the fastest three.

Chris Dixon with 1-3-25 for sixth was followed by Peter Bates 1-4-4 and Stuart Bottomley who returned 1-4-47 for tenth place.

Two Stockton Wheelers put themselves high in the final result, Ian Murray had a time of 1-3-10 to finish fifth ahead of his ninth-placed younger clubmate Paul Curran, who took his award for the fastest junior with 1-4-35.
