Paul Curran - "the useful 14-year-old"

Hartlepool cycling club opened last weekend's local competition with their ten-mile time trial promotion on the Crathorne course, which was won by Cleveland Coureur Cliff Davison in a time of 22-43.

Showing their strength in depth in short-distance time trialling, Stockton Wheelers' young squad claimed the next two places and the team award. Alex Mucha, the Wheelers' very consistent junior rider, filled second place with a time of 23-7 followed into third position by the club's other fast junior Ian Murray, with 23-18.

Stockton Wheelers have another very useful young rider in 14-year-old Paul Curran, who covered the course in 24-49.

Jim Giles of Crescent RC, feeling his form beginning to click into place, took sixth position with 23-49. Giles, top local time triallist of the '60s began racing again last year.

Rounding off Stockton's award winning afternoon veteran Len Downs, with a personal best 27-43, claimed the handicap prize.

June Howe, Teesside Clarion, won the Yorkshire Ladies Cycling Association '10' with her 26-30 performance. In second place, Doreen Hugill, of Ferryhill Wheelers, also claimed the handicap award with her 27-18.

Cleveland Coureur Jean Pearson was next of the local girls with 27-29, followed by Pam Clayton of Cleveland Wheelers, with 28-43.
