Great Fair Road Race

Curran's hopes are blown out

PAUL Curran's hopes of a second successive win in the Carlisle Great Fair road race were hit by a late puncture.

Curran, from Thornaby, had escaped from the field on the second of six laps of an 11-mile circuit at Cumdivock along with Commonwealth silver medallist Peter Longbottom, from Malton, and Welsh internationals Gary Thomas and Will Wright.

These four opened a 45-second lead when Wright punctured and was unable to get a replacement wheel.

Thomas, the eventual winner, rode clear and Curran then also punctured but was able to chase back into contention when he took a spare wheel from a marshall.

He outsprinted Longbottom by inches as this pair came in 30 seconds behind Thomas.

RESULTS

1. Gary Thomas
2. Paul Curran (Optimum Performance) at 30secs
3. Pete Longbottom st
