Northern Velo Road Race

One-two for Optimum Performance

FORMER Commonwealth Games champion Paul Curran held off club-mate Wayne Randle in a one-two for Optimum Performance RT in Sunday's 63-mile race at Hemlington, near Middlesbrough.

The two were in a group of seven riders who went away after only two miles as strong cross-winds split the field into three.

The leaders were only 10 seconds clear turning on to the 11-mile circuit, to be covered five times, but pulled relentlessly away until Curran attacked with 12 miles to go.

Randle and Martin Pitchford, now sporting the colours of Brough Wheelers, set off in pursuit between them leaving three clubmates to discourage lone intruder Martin Wordsworth (Maltby CC) from any heroics - and two miles out Randle said goodbye to his companion to continue the chase alone.
