Great Fair Road Race

Winning send-off for Curran

GIVING himself a winning send-off to the world championships in Sicily, where he is due to compete in the heats of the motor-paced event tomorrow (Friday), Paul Curran (Optimum Performance RT) scored another emphatic win in this Border City Wheelers event at Cumdivock, near Carlisle, on Sunday.

Curran, winner of the previous week's AXA Equity and Law GP, led a clean sweep of the top five places by North East riders, coming in 45 seconds clear as he left his two breakaway companions trailing on the last of six laps.

Norman Dunn (Middridge CRT), a winner in the ICF world championships at Buxton a week earlier, took second place ahead of Jeff Wright, whose North East RT team-mates Sean Tyson and Simon Telford took fourth and fifth places, two-and-a-half minutes behind Curran.

The first lap saw an 11-man break, and when Dunn attacked on the fifth circuit only Curran and Wright could stay with him as Mike Smith (Middridge) was dropped.
