IMPSPORT MASTERS

Masters success

A SERIES of Masters events - for riders over 30 - proved a popular introduction to the Leicester programme. Russell Williams (Geoffrey Butler Cycles) beat Paul Curran (Optimum Performance RT) in both the elimination and 20 km scratch races, while Mark Zaschke (Mid-Anglia CC) won the sprint.

Williams, still good enough to win bronze in the 20 km championship, has a remarkable record at Leicester.

Juvenile time trial and pursuit bronze medallist in 1976, he had amassed a total of 20 medals before this year's championships including senior amateur and professional golds.

The only class in which he didn't win gold was the juniors. 'I went on the road instead for those two years,' he said.

'I'm still going strong and I enjoy it. I've been round the world with cycling and it's been good to me.'
