Southgate CC Open '10'

CURRAN WINS ON F1

Paul Curran (Manchester Wheelers Trumanns) came from the Tour of Texas to the wide open concrete plains of the Fl course to win the Southgate CC 10 miles on Saturday afternoon, in 21-14.

The Commonwealth Games road champion had a considerable battle with clubmate Ian Cammish, who went through five miles with a 10-second lead in 9-57, pulling his chain over 12 teeth. This section was mainly back-wind and sloping downwards, factors in favour of Cammish.

On the first gradient coming back Curran deleted his debit and on the next hill he moved into credit, finally sprinting upwards on the slip road to finish with 24 seconds in hand on Cammish.

Earlier, Jeremy Harrison (Peterborough CC), had set a high standard, only three seconds down on Curran at half way and finishing third in 21-53.

The Harrison family were in the prizes, with Alex, 17, winning the junior award with 23-24 and Fiona, their mum, was fastest woman in 25-16. Dad failed to score highly but somebody has to make the bikes.

Almost anonymous in the time trial fraternity, the small figure of Curran studied the result board.

"I thought I may not have gone out fast enough but deliberately kept my gear down to 108 inches."
