TOUR OF THE PEAK

Curran keeps Star Trophy

PAUL CURRAN, Thornaby's Commonwealth Games gold medallist, was beaten into second place in the 87 mile Tour of the Peaks Road Race in Derbyshire at the weekend, but clinched the season-long Star Trophy competition for the second successive year.

Jon Clay, (Leeds) who was narrowly beaten in the national amateur championship in July, ended the season with an excellent win by 61 seconds.

It was the gruelling climb of Winnats Pass, 12 miles from the finish which cost Curran the race.

He fell back after catching the early leader, his Manchester Wheelers clubmate Deno Davie, just after the Snake Pass summit on the second and final circuit.

However, Curran still had sufficient in reserve to hold off Geoff Platts (Charnwood CRC) in a hectic sprint for the runners-up spot.

RESULTS

1. Jon Clay (Leeds)
2. Paul Curran (Manchester Whs)
3. Geoff Platts (Charnwood CRC)
