Jackson Trophy Road Race

Games riders dominate at Ponteland

The England Commonwealth Games road team dominated Sunday's Jackson Trophy road race at Ponteland, with Paul Curran and Keith Reynolds first and second respectively. Chris Lillywhite was seventh, Deno Davie eighth and Alan Gornall 11th.

The sixth member, John Tonks was a non-starter.

Two days after taking a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games team time trial, Curran was back to his winning ways, clipping off the front with Paul Blackett (Tyne Electric) after only two miles. Ian Norris (Barnesbury CC) had gone away just before them, and they soon became a leading trio.

Reynolds was chasing with Dave Lund (Middridge CRT) and Norman Dunn (Ferryhill Wheelers) and when they made contract with the Curran group after four miles, the winning break was formed.

Curran stayed with the group until 20-miles to go when he went for a prize, got a small gap and put his head down and kept going. He reached the finish 2-19 ahead of Reynolds who outsprinted Lund by half a wheel for second place.

Dunn was at a further second, while Norris and Blackett were dropped and finished at 3-15 and 5-50 respectively, but still ahead of the bunch.
