Cleveland Coureurs Australian Pursuit

Paul warms up in style

THORNABY'S Paul Curran sharpened up his form for the Olympics with an impressive win in the Cleveland Coureurs Australian Pursuit Race at Skelton.

Less than a week before he leaves for Los Angeles, Curran took the handicapped race in powerful style after starting in the last group of four as the scratch rider in the field of 40.

It took Curran only half a lap of the opening ten-mile circuit to catch and overtake all the early starting groups before joining Dave Bell (Teesside Clarion), Mike Milen (Northern Velo), and Middridge trio Greg Atkinson, Jack Wright and Jeff Hindmarsh.

When Curran moved off on his own again, Hindmarsh fell as they chased.

Alan Walker, Stockton Wheelers, and Mark Adamson, Richmond and Darlington, came through to take up Curran's challenge but were still 30 seconds adrift a mile from the finish with Dave Lund (Middridge), and Atkinson, Steve Paulding (City of Edinburgh), Milen and Bell making up the third group.

Curran cruised home the comfortable winner with Walker finishing as runner-up ahead of Adamson.

Paulding collected fourth place ahead of Lund after a late spill took Milen and Atkinson out of the race while the other rider involved, Bell, rode on to finish as the best Junior in the field.

The qualifying rounds of the British Cycling Federation Cleveland division s 4,000 metres pursuit championship take place tonight at the County Stadium, Clairville, and a new champion is guaranteed with reigning title holder Curran now riding for Manchester Wheelers and no longer qualifying for the Cleveland championships.
