Cleveland Division Track Championships

Curran and Paulding sweep the board

CLEVELAND Wheeler Steve Paulding and Stockton Wheeler Paul Curran again collected the main honours at the British Cycling Federation Cleveland division championship meeting at Cleveland County Stadium this week.

Paulding retained his B.C.F. Cleveland division 1000-metre sprint title, winning the final against Middridge CRT's Hilton McMurdo in two straight rides.

In a repeat of last year's semi-final, Paulding met the 1980 champion Curran, beating him in three very closely fought races, taking the first and last matches.

On his way into the final, McMurdo eliminated his club-mate Peter Stevenson with a two to one victory.

Curran dominated the 20-kilometre title race almost lapping the rest twice to take the gold medal.

Only McMurdo, having earlier broken clear with Curran stayed in the same lap, securing the silver medal while the bronze went to Kevin Byers, Thornaby CRT-Been Bag.
