Crescent RC Criterium

Champion show by Curran

ALTHOUGH narrowly beaten in the final event by Hugh Cameron (Manchester Wheelers), Stockton Wheeler Paul Curran carried off overall victory in the Crescent RC criterium series at Newton Aycliffe by a margin of 16 points.

Cameron did enough to tie for overall second place with Guisborough's Stuart Morris (Dinnington RC), both riders finishing with a total of 28 points at the end of the third county event.

Arthur Caygill (Richmond and Darlington CC) started the action, taking Alan Walker (Stockton Wheelers) and Dave Stockill and Gordon Panicca (Thornaby CRT), Richard Healy (Ryton Cheviots) and Cameron off the front of the bunch and quickly into a substantial lead.

With the leaders stretching their advantage to 20 seconds, Curran powered away from the bunch to bridge the gap and join the breakaway group after 14 miles.

Stirred into action by this move, the rest began to close, as Curran and Cameron jumped away to split the leaders.

Curran challenged as Cameron led the way up the final straight but could not get past the Manchester rider and for the second successive week had to settle for second place.
