Teesside Cycling Association '25'

Paul hits form in repeat win

SCORING his second success in three days, Stockton Wheeler's international Paul Curran produced a 55-57 performance to win the Teesside Cycling Association 25-mile time trial at Catterick.

The event, organised as part of the association's golden jubilee celebrations, had an entry of 85 riders from the local affiliated clubs and member clubs of the Northumberland and Durham Cycling Association.

Richmond and Darlington CC made sure of carrying off the team prize when Arthur Caygill covered the distance in 57-23 to finish as runners-up one place ahead of his club-mate Mark Adamson, who rode the Al course in 58-1. Third man in the winning aggregate was Len Roberts with his 1-0-27. Houghton's John Mawson, who was the early leader, finished fifth in 58-24.

Next of the local riders was Hambleton's Andrew Langford, seventh with a time of 59-56, ahead of the 1-0-2 of Cleveland Wheeler Andrew Ward, Tom Yendall of the Cleveland Coureurs with 1-0-37 and a 1-0-42 produced by Teesside Clarion's top veteran Arthur Hutchinson.

Fine start

Yendall also shared in the special award for the best team on standard when the Cleveland Coureurs combination of Bob Melroy - with a personal best ride - Yendall, Len Owens, Stuart Bottomley and John Southern put together a handicapped aggregate of 4-46-4.

In contrast to the almost all veteran line-up in the handicap team, a young man, just starting his cycling career, Teesside Road Club rider Andrew Tapp, 15, last man to start recorded an outstanding 1-3-49.
